The funding rate is a payment exchanged between longs and shorts at set times to keep perpetual futures prices anchored to spot. When it is positive, longs pay shorts; when it is negative, shorts pay longs. It grows positive when leverage piles up on the long side and turns negative when shorts crowd in.

Settlement intervals differ by exchange. Binance, Bybit, OKX and Bitget usually settle every 8 hours (every 4 or 1 hour for some coins), while Hyperliquid and Lighter settle hourly. This page therefore converts every rate to an annualized percentage, assuming the same rate holds for a full year, and compares them side by side.

The exchange spread is the annualized upper bound on funding you could collect by shorting a coin on the exchange with the highest rate and going long on the exchange with the lowest. It excludes fees, the price gap between the two exchanges and changes in funding, so actual returns will differ. This is not investment advice.
